Top Ten (#10) Clichés I Hate
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. For more details of this feature you can check out The Broke and the Bookish.
This week is a freebie, so I can choose whatever topic I want. And what did I chose? The clichéd clichés.
I blame myself
The character thinks everything is her mistake. Everything is my fault, I'm sorry; I'm sorry the moon comes out at night, I should've known that you want to see it in the morning. Or something along those lines. I'm so sick of reading characters with this kind of thinking.
Love triangle
Character A met and fall in love with character B but then character C came along and ruined the equation. Jesus Christ.
Perfect heroes
Perfect heroes are typically found in fantasy/dysopian books. The hero is strong, smart, gorgeous, sexy, mesmerizing (or everything that screams I'm better than anyone) and everything basically revolves around this character. I'm the long lost daughter of your king, you pheasant or The villain have never lost in a battle before but the newbie defeated him.
Bad boys
The heroine basically worships the hero even if he's a fucking douche. And this douche have a very tragic past that justify his douchey-ness. Then come along the boy-next-door that helped the heroine all throughout but bad boys always win, don't they?
Stereotypes
Mean popular people, anti-social smart people, it's tiring seeing them be categorized.
Small things/people, great responsibility
All the important stuff or powers are in one small thing and only one person can save the situation. Really? Really? Really?
Enemies turned lovers
Sworn enemies was paired together somewhere and they found out that they are wrong with their assumption that the other person is a stuck-up bitch or an asshole because they gave a sob story.
Black and white
The protagonist is right and that definitely means that the antagonist is wrong and evil.
Princes/s as paupers
The prince/princess disguises themselves and no one notices.
Miscommunication leads to fall out
Protagonist says, You don't have to say it, I already know what you'll say. You can go with him/her and spread cotton candy rainbows.

Ok, I agree with most, but I like when enemies become lovers. I really agree with the black & white (right vs wrong) cliche. I like when there's a little gray in every character. Great list!

Maybe I don't like enemies turned lovers because I like best friend turned lovers more. (That's more cliche, isn't it?) But I just do like them.

Most of these annoy me to no end too. I especially hate miscommunication because most of the time I don't understand how can they misunderstand each other so completely. Another one I hate is when the characters think it's a great idea to lie to their friend/bf/gf/whoever else that's close to them. When did that EVER work? I especially 'love' when only one person can save the situation when the said person has never been trained and there are all kinds of people around him/her that'd be more suitable yet he/she is the one who has to save the world. What a bullshit. Love triangles kill me. I can tolerate a few but mostly if I see what will the outcome be. I don't like angst filled novels, especially not if I picked up a fantasy. Who the hell wants to read about clichéd 'who to choose' monologues of the MC in a paranormal fantasy?
ReplyDeleteGreat list. :)

Agree with all of what you've said! You know, nothing grind my gears worse than all those cliches you've fabulously elaborated. Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteI get tired quickly of love triangles and "i blame myself" in books. Great topic! My TTT
ReplyDeleteThere are just so many books with that cliche, right? Thank you for stopping by!
DeleteUgh, I am definitely so tired of the whole "having a tragic past is a valid excuse for being a douche" thing. And your "I blame myself" section cracked me up even though sometimes I don't mind that if it's done well. Here's my TTT!
ReplyDeleteAny cliches, when done well was (a bit) okay for me. Bad boys should learn how to behave properly, haha.

Love triangles, I hate them with a passion! Seriously, why does every heroine need two romantic interests? And why does it always have to be one girl and two boys, you barely ever come across a love triangle which is one guy and two girls, I mean I don't want to see love triangles in either form but at least one guy and two girls love triangle would be a little different!

I hate them, too! I feel that the characters are emotionally cheating (maybe that's just me, though). Thank you for stopping by!
