Top Ten (#6) Diverse Books
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. For more details of this feature you can check out The Broke and the Bookish.
I have no problem reading books with the basic characters. But I gotta admit having diverse characters makes it more pretty fucking interesting (and a bit more relate-able, to me at the very least). It just saddens me to think that people avoids reading diverse books. Like, there's nothing wrong with being different. Different is good.
And we have We Need Diverse Books group to thank for prompting and advocating this types of books.
But what does "diversity" really means? We Need Diverse Books defines this as: "We recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities*, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities."
'Nuff said. Here's my top ten.

This is a great list--and I agree with what you said in the beginning about different being good. I admit I do not read as diversely as I could, but when I do, I have never regretted it. There are so many great books that fall into the category of diverse reading.
ReplyDeleteI have only read Eleanor and Park from your list. I enjoyed it quite a bit.The Perks of Being a Wallflower is one I am really interested in reading at some point.
At first, I haven't read that many diverse books. Not because I avoid them. And I agree with you, it's not something I regret doing. Also, you should check out The Perks of Being a Wallflower (book and/or movie, whatever you want)

I'm looking forward to: Anna Dressed in Blood, Legend, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and Say What You Will. And I simply cannot say enough good things about Eleanor & Park or Wonder. Awesome list.
ReplyDeleteGreat pick! I kind of know what you mean, I did like Eleanor & Park/Wonder though.
